Sak kha lai: a tattooing ritual and rite of passage unique to the ancient Lanna Kingdom that had all but disappeared into jungle lore, were it not for a chance encounter in Chiang Mai’s old city

We are living in a unique chapter of history within the story arc of sak kha lai. This documentary has been made at a turning point where the past has been rediscovered and slowly brought back to life from the generational void into which it fell but it is a time in which the future must be handled very carefully by those carrying the torch.

At its heart, therefore, this is a story about patience, diligence and depth of experience along a hard-wrought and never ending learning curve, driven by an unwavering sense of duty to preserve all Lanna wisdom of which sak kha lai is one very important element - to honor the elders past and pave the way for future generations. 

ABOUT SAK KHA LAI

Traditionally, for adolescent boys aged thirteen to fifteen, the sak kha lai ritual is carried out over three consecutive days: one day for each leg, and the third for the buttocks and waist. Each day begins at first light and continues until last light. Once your promise has been made to your master, there is no honorable way back; you must endure until the end. The belief is taken seriously that an incomplete tattoo is ill-fated.

While we are still trying to understand exactly who and where sak kha lai originated, it is a practice that belongs to the ancient Animist belief system, where the spirit world, the natural world and the human world are one and the same. 

These tattoos were— and for many still are— protective markings, believed to guard against predatory animals and imbue the wearer with dauntless bravery in combat, way out there deep in the forested mountains. They are a direct link to mythic guardian spirits, a living record of cultural lineage and a signifier of strength of character. They are also, very importantly, a tribute to the pain and endurance of all mothers during pregnancy and childbirth, which young men must acknowledge and respect as they step into adulthood.

ตามประเพณีดั้งเดิม พิธีสักขาลายจะทำกับเด็กชายวัยประมาณ 13–15 ปี ใช้เวลาสามวันติดต่อกัน—วันแรกสักขาข้างหนึ่ง วันที่สองสักอีกข้าง และวันที่สามสักบริเวณสะโพกและเอว พิธีในแต่ละวันเริ่มตั้งแต่แสงแรกของเช้าไปจนถึงแสงสุดท้ายของวัน เมื่อให้คำมั่นกับครูผู้สักแล้ว จะไม่สามารถถอยกลับได้ ผู้เข้าพิธีต้องอดทนจนกว่าจะเสร็จสมบูรณ์ เพราะมีความเชื่อว่าการสักที่ไม่ครบถ้วนเป็นลางไม่ดี

แม้เรายังคงพยายามทำความเข้าใจว่าสักขาลายเริ่มต้นขึ้นเมื่อใดและที่ใด แต่พิธีกรรมนี้ผูกโยงอยู่กับความเชื่อดั้งเดิมแบบผีบรรพชน ที่มองว่าโลกวิญญาณ โลกธรรมชาติ และโลกของมนุษย์เป็นสิ่งเดียวกัน
